Know Your Mighty Writers: Kahlaa Cannady & Christian Precise

School: J.R. Masterman

Grade: 5th

Known each other: Since first grade

How did you become Mighty Writers?
KC:  “My mom heard about Mighty Writers through her job at the Philadelphia library.”
CP:  “Heard about it, and walked in.”

How do you feel about writing?
KC:  “It’s fun because you get to write about your feelings.”
CP:  “Writing’s cool. I like narratives full of lots of descriptions and details.”

Favorite books
KC: “Realistic fiction and my favorite book is ‘Maniac Magee.’”
CP: “Harry Potter books are my favorite. I’m almost finished all seven.”

Favorite subject
KC: “Math. I like solving problems.”
CP: “I like gym. It’s better to get exercise instead of sitting around in a classroom.”

Least favorite
KC: “Well, social studies. I don’t like how we learn such general history and not enough about specific important people.”
CP: “I don’t like health class. This week we’re learning about puberty.  My friend had a good idea:  girls should be taught by female teachers, separately from the boys.”

For fun
KC:  “I like soccer. I play midfield for the South Philly Anderson Monarchs.”
CP:  “I like to play with my little sister, Carrington. She’s only six.”

My ideal job
KC: “A crime scene investigator in Miami.”
CP: “I’d work at a cat shelter. I don’t want to be a vet who does the surgeries; I  just want to help take care of them.”

Hidden talents
KC:  “Singing. Not many people know that about me.”
CP: “I’m strong and flexible. Kids in my gym class think I’m superhuman.”

Personal role model
KC: “Barack Obama.”
CP: “I like Michael Jackson for his music. But he’s not really a role model for me.”

How would you be defined in a dictionary?
KC: “Smart, kind, caring and dependable.
CP: “Tough, but smart, nice and reliable.
