The 2010 Caldecott Medal for the most distinguished picture book has been awarded to Jerry Pinkney for “The Lion & the Mouse,” published by Little, Brown and Company Books for Young Readers.

“… illustrations masterfully portray the relationship between two very unlikely friends.”
A native of Philadelphia, Pinkney studied at the Philadelphia College of Art (now University of the Arts) and in 1992 received the Alumni Award. He has been illustrating children’s books since 1964, illustrating over one hundred titles and has been the recipient of five Caldecott Honor Medals, five Coretta Scott King Awards and has four Coretta Scott King Honor Awards. His books have been translated into eleven languages and published in fourteen different countries. He has received nine awards for his body of work.
From the American Library Association, announcing the prize: “The screech of an owl, the squeak of a mouse and the roar of a lion transport readers to the Serengeti plains for this virtually wordless retelling of Aesop’s classic fable. In glowing colors, Pinkney’s textured watercolor illustrations masterfully portray the relationship between two very unlikely friends.”
