“In a study of more than 2,000 children conducted by Experian Simmons, a unit of Experian PLC, 75% of 12- to 17-year-olds said they get along with their parents, and 72% said they like spending time with their families. In a June 2007 study, 93% of teens said they had a good relationship with their mothers—an estimated 15 to 20 percentage points higher than two decades ago…”

“This less-defiant generation is influencing plots, changing what types of shows get made and prompting networks like MTV that have long specialized in youthful rebellion to rethink their approach…”

Notes From LA Book Festival

April 25th, 2010

“Although McSweeney’s Books, Eggers’ publishing house, is one of most charming, smart, and cool publishers in America, it was strange to hear Eggers say he doesn’t read on an iPad or a Kindle and that nothing has changed about the tactile experience of the book. Readers of websites like this one and thousands who download e-books every day would probably disagree.”

“My personal highlight was seeing comedienne/actress Sarah Silverman. She’s out promoting her autobiography, ‘The Bedwetter: Stories of Courage, Redemption, and Pee.’ Her self-titled Comedy Central show also just wrapped up its third, and likely last, season. Her book has a bit of her surrealist style, while also delving into all aspects of her life. She writes about her relationships, dealing with depression, and, as the title might give away, her bedwetting into her teen years.”

Mighty Quote of the Day

April 22nd, 2010

“A scrupulous writer, in every sentence
that he writes, will ask himself at least
four questions: 1. What am I trying to say?
2. What words will express it? 3. What
image or idiom will make it clearer?
4. Is this image fresh enough to have an effect?”

—George Orwell

Mighty Teacher

April 22nd, 2010

In 51 years, this retired kindergarten teacher has reached many milestones, including earning one of the highest teaching honors—National Board Certification in 2003.

Now, Erlene Bass Nelson, 80, can add one more honor to her list.

The National Teachers Hall of Fame announced at yesterday’s School Reform Commission meeting that the former instructor is among its five 2010 inductees, and only the fourth from Pennsylvania to ever be honored.
