Mighty Writers Goes to Washington!

September 23rd, 2010

James, one of our regulars (that’s him right there), came into Mighty Writers this week carrying a box of cardboard boxes.

“What’s that?” a whole bunch of his Mighty Writer colleagues asked all at once.

(We hear that very same chorus anytime somebody comes through the door carrying something that’s not immediately identifiable.)

“It’s the Capitol building in Washington, D.C.,” James answered coolly. “My school project.”

James proceeded to kneel on the floor and unbox all his boxes. Then he stacked them up carefully in a way that showed he had clearly done this several times before. His hands moved quickly.

When he finished creating his cardboard Capitol out of his box of cardboard boxes, he popped a homemade American flag atop the building with a flourish.

That drew some serious ahhhs.

As it turned out, James’ cardboard Capitol building triggered a big conversation about Washington, D.C., among the Mighty Writers in his vicinity.

All the kids began shouting out what they’d like to see in Washington, D.C.—the White House, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial—Sasha Obama!

And that segued into who had been to D.C. and who hadn’t—and guess what? Most nobody had. And guess what? Everybody wants to—because, as Muhktar, our resident graphic artist, put it: “There’s so much there to see and draw and write about.”

So you can probably guess what’s coming next—yep, Mighty Writers goes to Washington, D.C.

With so much to “see and draw and write about,” how can we not make this trip happen?

We’re just now beginning to look into costs and dates and how it’s going to work, and we’ll keep you posted when we land on the specifics.

Maybe you’ll want to come with us?

There’s soooo much to see in D.C., you know. So much, according to Muhktar, that “we may have to leave at 5:45 in the morning!”

We’re taking that suggestion under advisement.

Language Dies, Few Notice

“The end came quietly on Aug. 21 on the letters page of the Washington Post. A reader castigated the newspaper for having written that Sasha Obama was the ‘youngest’ daughter of the president and first lady, rather than their ‘younger’ daughter. In so doing, however, the letter writer called the first couple the ‘Obama’s.’ This, too, was published, constituting an illiterate proofreading of an illiterate criticism of an illiteracy. Moments later, already severely weakened, English died of shame.”

Myth of Superman

September 20th, 2010

Waiting for Superman” gets its title from Geoffrey Canada, founder of the Harlem Children’s Zone, who told the filmmakers that as a kid he expected Superman to rescue him from his South Bronx tenement. But the script grew out of director Davis Guggenheim’s uneasiness with the decision to send his children to private school, even though he passed three public schools every morning as he drove his kids to school.

Though not yet officially released, “Waiting for Superman” is already being hotly debated by educators.

The movie makes you think about whether “our entire public school system ought to be scrapped, starting with the teeming urban and rural high schools that have become dropout factories,” writes Maureen Downey in the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
