Every fall like clockwork, the questions start rolling in from juniors and seniors.
“When should I take the SAT or ACT?”
“How can I get a fee waiver?”
“What’s the difference between these two tests, anyway?”
We do our best to support each student who comes through our doors, and we’ve offered some of the best, free SAT Prep in the city for the past few years. We know you count on us to help Philly teens succeed and find a pathway to college.
When we learned that the SAT was going to be changing in 2016, we paused to reflect, do a little research and talk to the experts.
What we found will change College Prep at Mighty Writers in the coming year.
When we began our research, we were skeptical of the ACT. We thought it was the less popular college admission test, lagging behind the SAT nationwide. As you can see from the picture below, we were wrong.
Beginning in 2012, the ACT became the preferred test nationwide.
Maria Ferzola-Lipiros, CEO and Founder of TEACH, a test prep company with over ten years’ experience, explained why. Here are just a few of the facts she shared:
The ACT is accepted at all U.S. colleges. It doesn’t have a penalty for wrong answers and it’s more closely aligned with students’ in-school learning. The ACT is also more predictable and straightforward and it tests very little vocabulary.
Finally, we learned that when Philly students take both tests, 85-90% of them do better on the ACT than the SAT.
That was enough for us. Beginning in the spring of 2015, Mighty Writers will offer ACT Prep in collaboration with TEACH, LLC. Our first class will be held at MW South, 1501 Christian St. Dates will be announced in January 2016, and classes will begin in February 2016.
