“On the Road” Workshops

Are you looking to turn a group of Philly students into Mighty Writers but unable to make it to our center at 15th and Christian?

We take some of our tried-and-true writing workshop classes “on the road” for students at local organizations, schools, libraries and youth centers.

Please choose from the following Mighty favorites, and get in touch. All On the Road workshops are fee-for-service and prices are available upon request.

Stage to Page
Suggested age group: 5 to 7 years
Teaching Artist: Martha Cooney
We use our imaginations to explore oral storytelling and drama as a kickstart for writing stories about knights, castles, princesses and other royalty. As young directors and players, we bring our stories to life, then write and illustrate them in book form. We learn the basic elements of a story, including the who (characters), where (setting) and what (plot). We stir up the magic of the stories we create through play. Available as a single or six-session workshop.

Comics for Beginners: Panels & Pages
Suggested age group: 7 to 9 years, or 10 and up
Teaching Artist: Asher Humm
Do you like cartoons? How about comic books? Do you use your imagination to dream up your own stories? In this introduction to the structure and style of comic book writing, you’ll learn to think up a story, write and draw your own comic panels and finally create your own comic pages. If you’re brand new to comics or ready to learn more, comic artist and enthusiast Asher Humm will show you how to get started. Available as a single or six-session workshop.

Comic Madness
Suggested age group: 10 and up
Teaching Artist: Alli Katz
Learn techniques for crafting a narrative, pacing, storyboarding, page layout and cover art. During six one-hour sessions, students produce their very own comic books individually or in small groups. Join the ranks of the Mighty Comic Artists. Available as a single or six-session workshop.

Transform Your Voice
Suggested age group: 11 and up
Teaching Artist: Stephanie Cawley
In this poetry workshop, students will read and write poems in which the poet has adopted a persona or stepped into an imagined character. These will include poems in the voices of animals, fairy tale characters, cartoon characters and inanimate objects. Towards the end of the workshop, students will write poems in a more personal voice, but with a new understanding of what makes their own voices unique, and with a new permission to take liberties with their own voices. Available as a single or six-session workshop.

Girls Rule the World: Writing Young Philly
Suggested age group: 11 and up
Teaching Artist: Mikala Jamison
This workshop will give girls a chance to develop their critical reading and writing skills while thinking about what it means to see the world through the eyes of a Philadelphia girl. We’ll study literature by other women and girls and talk about some of the issues facing us today: body image, relationships, friendships, stereotypes and more. In a safe and supportive community, we’ll discover our girl power and write from a place of kindness and acceptance. Girls rule — first Philadelphia, and then the world! Available as a single or six-session workshop.

Writing Comic Scripts
Suggested age group: 12 and up
Teaching Artist: Hayden Mitman
This is a class with a little bit of “character.” Every story, no matter what, needs characters. In this class we will create robust characters and write high-action comic scripts. Get your pens ready. If you’ve got an idea for a story, we’ll show you how to create the characters you’ll need to make your story stand out. Available as a single or six-session workshop.

Writing My Neighborhood
Suggested age group: 12 and up
Teaching Artist: Sam Allingham
Students discuss what it means to be from a place. The class will move from basic sense description—eyes for visual imagery, nose for smells, ears for dialogue—to more complex questions like “what’s my route?” (where I go and don’t go) and “who do I meet?” (who I talk to and who I don’t). Available as a single or six-session workshop.

Sportswriting
Suggested age group: 13 and up
Teaching Artist: Annette John-Hall
Have a case of World Series fever? Is Michael Vick your main man? Come work with a writer who covered pro sports, Annette John-Hall. A columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer, Annette will discuss all the hottest topics in sports and show what it takes to make a story pop. Learn insider secrets about how writers get professional athletes to open up in an interview. Available as a single or six-session workshop.

Writing Rocks! Family Literacy Workshop
For families of Mighty Writers aged 4-8
Teaching Artist: Martha Cooney
This family literacy workshop teaches parents of young children how to encourage their children to write clearly and creatively. Get your kids excited about writing with fun activities from creating storybooks based on artistic projects to dramatic play games that inspire the written word, with a bumper crop of takeaway items and ideas to help you incorporate literacy throughout daily life, from the kitchen to the park to Grandma’s house and back. Available as a single or six-session workshop.
