Summer on South Writing Camp

June 3rd, 2013

Summer on South Writing Camp
A two-week writers’ camp for rising 9th & 10th graders
Monday through Thursday, 9am-3pm
July 8 to July 18
1537 South Street

Sharpen your writing skills (and have big fun) by joining other city teens for this eight-day summer experience. The day will begin early with fun creative writing exercises, then local journalist (and former Inquirer columnist) Annette John-Hall will take over with her popular sportswriting class. The day will conclude with Andrea Bullard (pictured), editor of the Mighty Post, teaching a blogging workshop. (We’ll also be lunching with guest writers.) This rare opportunity is open to only 12 students, so apply here today.

Legacies 101

June 3rd, 2013

Books to Blues
Free to Philadelphia students ages 10-12
Wednesdays, 4:00-6:00pm
July 10, 17, 24, 31; Aug. 7, 14 (6 sessions)
This class will take place at 1501 Christian Street.

Meet revolutionary (and often under-appreciated) musicians from days past who changed society with their music and their beliefs. We’ll examine the work of John Coltrane (pictured), Nina Simone, Bill Withers, Curtis Mayfield and many more. We’ll uncover the social impact of these musicians by learning about their writings and how they lived. By the end of these six soulful sessions, we’ll build a portfolio of letters for each artist and create original songs of our own. Register here.
