Comic Book Club

Share comic books, learn the basics of storyboarding, practice live illustration and more. We’ll also explore MIGHTYVISION, Mighty Writers’ new comic book gallery opening this summer. Unlike our school year workshops, attendance at all our summer clubs is not mandatory. Come one day or join us for all of the club meetings.

Garden Writing Club with Urban Blazers
(7-14 years)

This summer club is an extension of our school year workshop. We’ll practice outdoor poetry by the masters and continue working on our speed writing skills while caring for our plants, and harvesting and distributing our fresh fruits and vegetables.

We’ll be checking out the poetry of Shel Silverstein, the work of students from around the globe and our own Mighty selves. By the end of the workshop, we’ll produce a Personal Poetry Book with all of our summer poems.

Mighty Playwriting with Bianca Crespo
(10-12 years)

Capture the time you felt the most Mighty. We’ll do group theater activities and write one scene individually or in pairs. The goal for the end of the workshop is for each individual (or pair) to perform their scene for an audience of Mighty Writer volunteers, friends and parents. Attendance at all workshop meetings is encouraged.

Positive Minds at the Teen Lounge
(13+ years)

Make movies, take pictures and change the world. The founder of Positive Minds will work with us this summer to make short movies about the issues that matter most to us. Does South Philly need a new skate park? Want to turn that empty lot across the street into a community garden? Tired of cliques at your school? Whatever your issue, we’ll talk about it. Then we’ll join our voices and our movie production skills to make a statement.

Mighty SAT Prep: Morning Session
(16-18 years)
Monday through Thursday, 10am-12pm; 3 practice tests 10am-2pm
June 27 to July 28, 2011
Do you want to raise your SAT score by 200 points or more? Are you willing to put in the work that it takes with our Mighty instructor? In this course, we learn the secrets of mastering the Reading and Mathematics sections of the SAT. We’ll also take three practice tests and watch our scores go up. One of the best known proponents of putting graphic novels on library shelves is Katharine “Kat” Kan, who has been advocating for comics in schools for over fifteen years.

“I saw how the boys loved finding comics in the library,” Kan told Publishers Weekly recently, “and when they found out that a lady old enough to be their mom liked comics, they realized librarians did care about what they liked. It all started from there… I think comics should be used as more than literacy tools. They provide a wonderful springboard for creative writing, for art, for use in science and social studies, even math.”
