Winter Classes

Winter Weather Watch (Ages 5-7)
Sundays 1:00-2:30pm
Jan. 8, 15, 22, 29, Feb. 5, 12 (6 sessions)
*Located at Mighty Writers, 1501 Christian Street
Our youngest Mighty Writers are invited to get excited about reading, writing and watching the sky in this interdisciplinary and imaginative workshop. We’ll start off by reading “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,” by Judi Barrett and learn how to use simile, metaphor and other literary devices to talk about the weather. Each week, we’ll consider the weather through one of the five senses: sight, touch, sound, smell or taste and produce an imaginative weather forecast of our own.

Chase the Shark (Ages 5-6)
Sunday 3:00-4:30
Feb. 26 (1 session only)
*Located at Mighty Writers, 1501 Christian Street
Local children’s author Wiley “Chase” Griffin will read from the latest book in his series, “Chase the Shark,” in which three sharks escape a fictional Philadelphia Aquarium to seek out food, fun, and adventure. Herman Hammerhead himself will be joining us for the reading. Join us for an afternoon of discovery as we imagine and write our own sea creature escapades.

We’ll use our imaginations to explore oral storytelling and drama as a kickstart for writing down stories about knights, castles, princesses and other royalty. As young directors and players, we’ll bring our stories to life, then write and illustrate our stories in book form. We’ll learn the basic elements of a story including the who (characters), where (setting) and what (plot). Come stir up the magic of the stories we create through play!

Feb. 19, 26, Mar. 4, 11, 18, 25 (6 sessions)

Learn how to rap! Through a series of writing sessions, we’ll learn how to put rhythm and rhyme to our writing about family, neighborhoods and friends. Be prepared to take your poetic flair to new and exciting heights with the addition of instrumental music and rhythmic group performance. A graduate of the Writing for Film and Television Program at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Karas Lamb is a freelance writer with an ear for great music and a love for the written word. Join the Mighty Cypher. Together, we’ll make our own raps and show the world we’ve got skills.
